MONTESSORI
JUNIOR HIGH

Creekside Campus Only

(7th & 8th grade)

September - June

Our Junior High program is different from any other program you will find in the South Sound area. Current brain research echoes Maria Montessori’s observations of the adolescent.

The 7th and 8th grade years encompass a time of rapid growth and change in the early adolescent. Junior High students need a lot of movement, need to choose work that they feel is purposeful and important, need to feel a sense of belonging, and need to know that their voice is being heard. All of these things will allow adolescents to maximize their brain’s development and their potential.

Harbor Montessori School’s Junior High program is based on the developmental needs of adolescents in this age group.

Those needs include:

  • Trust

  • Self-expression

  • Analytical thought

  • Commitment

  • Responsibility

  • Service to others

  • Valorization

The program is intended to be a reflection of society, with students solving their own problems as a community with the guidance of a teacher. Students work collaboratively to serve others, to care for the gardens on campus, and to run their student business.

The school year is divided into theme-based cycles and covers an array of subjects including math, literature, world history, US history, Washington state history, economics, chemistry and physics, biology, and more. By the end of Junior High, your adolescent will have a learning portfolio that chronicles their hard work, interests, and successes.

Adolescence is a time of great changes. Our Junior High aims to support this time of increased creativity, a need to positively impact the world, and a need to build strong community bonds throughout our program. Adolescents are often seeking answers to the question "Who am I?" during this time through deep exploration of the self and the world around them. While our program has strong academic aspects, we also dedicate a great deal of energy to practical life skills. At this age, those skills are communication, personal independence, financial independence, and problem solving.
